The thought of your home being broken into, damaged and/or burglarized is very upsetting indeed. Locksmiths can do so much more than help you replace a lost or stolen key. We can also play a role in establishing and maintaining a safe and secure home. Unfortunately, there are some myths concerning locksmith services. To help set the record straight, First Lock Security & Technologies will bust these myths today!
Locksmith Facts & Fallacies
Myth #1- Keys that say “do not duplicate” cannot copied
Just because your key is stamped “Do Not Duplicate” or “Duplication Prohibited” does not mean that it will not or cannot be duplicated. Most locksmiths will cut these keys without question, but hardware stores most likely will not. You can prevent a key from getting duplicated by purchasing a key restricted lock. In addition to these locks and corresponding keys coming with a higher price tag, you will also need to show proof of ownership if you need a key made.
Myth #2- Locksmiths keep a copy of the key they are duplicating
This is untrue. Locksmiths do not retain a key to the lock they are duplicating for you. First of all, keeping a copy of the keys we duplicate would be highly impractical. If we made a copy of every key for ourselves, we would quickly run out of room! There is absolutely no reason for us to keep a copy on hand. The key copies we make are provided for security and flexibility to the owner. You can be sure that all keys will be given to you.
Myth #3- Locksmiths are restricted to residential calls
Do not assume that locksmiths are only able to keep your home safe. Yes, we will make sure your home is secure, but we can make sure your business is protected as well. Our locksmiths are well trained and experienced in all types of security and we can cover various fields with ease and efficiency.
Myth #4- Locksmiths always work quickly
Everyone wants to get into their home quickly when locked out, but there are situations where the process of regaining access may take longer than anticipated. Specialized services can be difficult and time consuming. We ask that you give our locksmiths time and space to get the job done as quickly as possible.
Myth #5- Locksmithing is easy
Locksmiths make it look easy but there is extensive training required, and many hours worked to make it appear that way. Many times, locksmiths are under a lot of pressure to open up locks and they can also be put in dangerous situations with tenant evictions, police open ups and domestic situations with one or more spouse. Locksmiths also need to be efficient any time of the day if they work 24/7, and this is not always easy.
Myth #6- All locksmiths are reputable and trustworthy
We all wish we could trust every business, but unfortunately we cannot. Regrettably, there is a common locksmith scam that plagues the United States. You may come across an out of town “locksmith” that advertises locally and then becomes the first responder to a distressed customer. They will seal the deal with the promise of quick service and low prices. The customer will then end up waiting an extended period and end up being charged much more than promised. It is important to always check credentials when hiring a locksmith. A good indication of a reputable locksmith company is that they have a brick and mortar shop you can walk in to and not just an address which may be nothing more than a mail box location. In California, all persons engaged in the repair and installation of locks and keys must be licensed by the state.
